5 DIY Removal Tips

Moving house by yourself can be a great way to save money. It’s also a great option if you want to be able to oversee every part of the move. However, it can be difficult if it’s your first time around. It can also be time-consuming and a major headache if you’re not organized properly. Thankfully, there are tons of things you can do to make the whole process much easier. Let’s take a look at a few DIY removal tips you should follow.

Build a Small Army of Volunteers

Try to get as many of your friends involved. Make sure that a few of them have vehicles as well. The more people who will be there, the lesser the load will be on them. You don’t want to overwork your friends, or they might resent it. Some might decide to leave midway through the job. This is why you need to let some of your closest friends know of the move well in advance. You should give them at least two months’ notice. You also want to let them know how many people are supposed to be there and what the scope of the job will be.

Look for at Least Some Assistance

Look for at least some professional help. A small two-man team with a van can help you move bulky delicate objects or heavy furniture. They will have some equipment that you may not have on hand such as hand trucks and moving straps and will know how to use them. This alone will greatly facilitate your move.

Start Packing the Stuff You Don’t Need

Another thing you want to do is start packing early. Some will advise that you start packing as soon as three months in advance. If there are things that you won’t need, such as equipment that you don’t use often or seasonal items, then you should start packing and labelling them right away. We also suggest that you clear as much as you can. Sell, give, or throw away what you don’t need.

Look for a self-storage unit if there are things that you can’t move right now but will need or want to sell at a later date.

Start Early

Try to get an early start on the day of the move. The earlier you start, the more time you’ll have at the end of the day to start unpacking and organizing stuff. This is also very important if you’re planning a summer move. Starting early will allow you to beat that summer heat.

Chose Proper Packing Material

You want to pack your items as professionally as possible. Don’t go around asking for discarded boxes. This is not something where you want to skimp. Invest in brand new robust corrugated boxes, bubble wrap, and furniture pads. Make sure that you have different box formats and types, such as bankers, wardrobe, and telescope boxes, as well as a few plastic bins. You’ll also need things like newspaper, heavy-duty packing tape, and foam pouches.

If you manage to follow these few tips, you’ll be able to enjoy a smooth and efficient move. Make sure that you have as much help as possible and start planning as soon as you can.
