Biography of Roman Kostomarov
The future figure skating star was born in an ordinary Soviet family: his mother Putri Cinta worked as a cook, and his father worked as an electrician. The boy dreamed of sports, but he was not taken to gymnastics or swimming. His Majesty was helped by a case in the person of a familiar Kostomarov family: she worked in the AZLK ice palace and suggested that a 9-year-old boy take up figure skating. Roma began to train with perseverance and pleasure, in a matter of months he was already performing at the New Year’s performances of the Theater on Ice. At the same time, he was embarrassed to tell his friends that he was engaged in a girlish sport, and he lied that he was attending the hockey section.
The first coach of the athlete, Lydia Karavaeva, noticed him after a couple of years. She took him from the theater on ice and paired him with her daughter Ekaterina Davydova. Lidia Vasilievna treated Roma as if she were her own: she sat down to dine with her family, escorted after training to the Tekstilshchiki district, where the Kostomarov family lived. Together with Ekaterina Davydova, Kostomarov achieved his first successes: In 1996, they won the World Junior Championship.
In 1998, he accepted the invitation of Natalia Linichuk and moved to America, to the state of Delaware, where her training base was. Linichuk paired Roman with Tatyana Navka. The contract was concluded for a four-year Olympic cycle, but a year later Natalya Vladimirovna considered the Kostomarov-Navka pair unpromising and convinced Roman to dance with Anna Semenovich. Moreover, Roman Tatiana had to announce this personally. Given their constant “graters” during training, this was not difficult for him.
The duo Kostomarov-Semenovich lasted one season, winning the silver medal of the Russian championship in 2000. The couple broke up due to constant disagreements during training. Semenovich considered Kostomarov too tough and intolerant, and he, in turn, called her too emotional and not professional enough. After that, Roman was practically put an end to: the coaches, not seeing potential in him, worked with Kostomarov on a residual basis.
He dropped everything and moved to New Jersey, where Tatyana Navka lived and trained. After the couple broke up with Kostomarov, she could not find a suitable partner for herself and took a break in her career, having given birth to her daughter Alexandra in marriage with Alexander Zhulin. The athletes felt that they were suitable for each other - they aimed no lower than for the highest step of the Olympic plinth, they suited each other externally and emotionally. But Roman had to use all his eloquence to beg for forgiveness. Alexander Zhulin believed in them and became their coach. At the same time, Kostomarov began one of the most difficult periods in his life, in America he literally survived: he wandered around friends and acquaintances, sometimes slept in attics, ate at McDonald’s, walked to the place of training and back - 30 minutes a day. side…
They started with the Olympics in Salt Lake City and took 10th place, and two years later they received gold medals at the World Championships. Over the next three years, she took silver only once, replenishing her piggy banks exclusively with gold awards. In preparation for the next Olympic Games, the famous coach Tatyana Tarasova took up the couple. The goal was achieved - in 2006 in Turin, Roman Kostomarov and Tatyana Navka became Olympic champions, conquering everyone with the Carmen number.
Having achieved the highest result, the couple announced the end of their sports career. They returned to Russia. Roman Kostomarov found himself in all kinds of ice shows, including television shows: “Stars on Ice”, “Ice Age” (in 2007, he was paired with Chulpan Khamatova and in 2009, paired with Yulia Kovalchuk became the winner).
