Lakshman, the son of Karni Mata, is said to have drowned while attempting to get water from a pond in Kolayat Tehsil’s Kapil Sarovar. Karni Mata pleaded with Yama, the god of death, to grant his request. Lakshman and all the male progeny of Karni Mata were permitted to be reborn as rats after Yama originally refused and eventually gave in.

Karni Mata Festival
